    UPDATE 9.16: VISIBILITY SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS

    Update 9.16 includes optimisation of the visibility system, which is an important component of the game. Now, spotted vehicles will be displayed much quicker on screen – the difference will be particularly noticeable when spotting enemy vehicles at a distance of more than 300 metres. In this article, we will explain how we managed to achieve such a result, and how it will affect the game.

    EFFECT UPON GAMEPLAY

    Vehicles that spot enemies from a long distance will have a little more time to make a shot right after spotting an enemy vehicle.

    Spotted vehicles will have a harder time crossing short, open areas, since they will be immediately displayed on the screens of their opponents. They will have to either perform active manoeuvres to make it difficult for the enemy to target them or choose a different route.

    CHANGES IN 9.16
    Achieving this improvement to the spotting system required solving two problems: firstly, how to rework the server calculations and, secondly, how to speed up the display of spotted vehicles in the game client.

    Server Related Changes
    Our server programmers re-wrote the visibility-system code, keeping all previous operating rules. The transfer to a more effective programming language allowed them to reduce the server load and increase the performance of the visibility system. In other words, the system started working more effectively while using the same rules and consuming less resources.

    Detection Check is a server request that determines whether an enemy vehicle is within the visibility range and whether it can be spotted. The visibility check is performed constantly, with its interval depending on the distance from the enemy.

    The interval between visibility checks depends on their distance: checks are more frequent at a short distance, and as the distance increases the interval increases as well. The optimisation performed allowed us to increase the number of visibility checks two-fold at nearer distances and adds additional simplified checks for further distances, leading to a three-fold increase in the total number of visibility checks in comparison with the previous version. The increased frequency of visibility checks in turn allows us to reduce the delay when displaying spotted vehicles.

    Client Related Changes
    Client-related improvements have saved about 60–70% of the time required to render a vehicle model. Now, when entering a battle, the vehicle models and map objects are all loaded in together. This solution allowed us to reduce the rendering time upon spotting as well as the possibility of “freezes” when enemy vehicles are spotted.

    WORLD OF WARSHIPS - 0.5.12 DEVELOPMENT CHANGES

    The following information comes from Ph3lan, the community manager on the EU forums.

    Please, be informed that based on the interim results of the public test of the 0.5.12 Update, we revised a number of previously announced changes:

    • All changes to the hull plating thickness, including the plating of battleships and destroyers, are cancelled. We analysed statistics and feedback for this change and saw that it didn’t fully meet the objectives. Adjustments to the balance of the individual classes and tiers will continue to be necessary, but, thanks to the information obtained from the general test, we will be able to find a more accurate and effective solution and show it to you in one of the following versions;

    • New modernization for the VIII-X tier cruisers “Steering Gear Modification 3” will remain, and will be added to the game. It brings more diversity to the high-level cruisers gameplay, while providing an alternative to the configuration with maximum stealth. This has a positive effect on the game as a whole. Beyond that, we have decided to give the same modernization to all VIII-X tier destroyers. For them, the choice between accelerated rudder shift and invisibility will be even more interesting. At the same time, we eliminate the illogical situation where the rudder shift speed for cruisers rudders may exceed the rudder shift speed for destroyers;

    • Other balance changes and fixes are presently found to be effective, and they remain in force.

    • Economic changes announced in the development bulletin will be included in full. However, in addition, an experimental system for calculating the costs per battle was implemented. The biggest part of the costs is ship’s repairs. Its influence was growing more and more with the rise of the tier. As a result, at tier X, the economy forced the players to behave with maximum caution, which negatively affected the dynamics of the battle. After all, even with significant combat success, a complete destruction of the ship led to a huge repair bill that could completely neutralize the profits. We decided to change this situation and make the following changes:

    • The fee for the ship repair is now completely replaced by a fixed service charge. This means that the cost will not depend on how much damage a player has received. Moreover, we have reduced the cost of replenishing the ammunition (or air group) for a number of ships. The positive effect of the changes will increase with increasing tiers of the ships. This means that the players may try a more aggressive and risky playing style. The “to play with maximum efficiency at any cost, even being destroyed in battle” tactic will be an alternative to the “to play as carefully as possible so as not to come out of the battle with negative balance because of the repair costs” tactic. For example, the change will reduce the spending of tier X ships by an average of 50 000 credits and reduce the number of situations where you can go into negative with a premium account, having played effectively. We want to free the gameplay from the “not-gaming” question of “how much I will lose if dare to attack?”
    WORLD OF TANKS - 9.16 SOUND IMPROVEMENTS

    WORLD OF TANKS - 9.16 SOUND IMPROVEMENTS

    The switch to the Audiokinetic Wwise platform in Update 9.14 unlocked the ability to use sounds to provide much more information to players, such as the approximate calibre of the gun, the type of shell, and the amount of damage received, etc. With the improved sound feedback, players are able to understand the current situation on the battlefield faster and make more appropriate decisions.

    We have been continuing to work on the sound for the game over the last several Updates, and we have some news that we would like to share with you about a number of sound improvements coming in Update 9.16.

    INTERFACE
    In the next update, the audio-settings interface will be made visually clearer:

    The Interface and Notifications slider will be split into two separate ones: Interface and Voice Messages. The Music slider will also be split into Music in battle and Music in Garage:

    CALIBRE RANGE
    The calibre range will be extended. Now, sounds from five different calibres (instead of the previous three) will be played in Tier VIII-X battles.

    GUNS AND DAMAGE
    A new sound system for cartridge reloading will be added to provide additional information about the number of shells in the cartridge. Different sounds will now play when the player is down to their last shell in the cartridge, when all shells have been fired, and when the player runs out of ammo.
    Damaged engine sounds will be added (when the module is damaged, not destroyed).
    A sound notification when the gun is unable to fire (destroyed) will be added.
    Individual sounds for damage to each of the modules will be added.

    NIGHT MODE
    Night mode allows players to decrease the game’s volume with a single button. This option will considerably decrease the volume of the loudest sounds and decrease the general level of low frequencies:

    BATTLE END
    Sounds that notify the battle’s end will be added, such as the last enemy’s destruction or when the enemy base is captured.

    NEW SOUNDS FOR SIXTH SENSE PERK
    We will be adding the ability to select between two stock sounds for the Sixth Sense perk notification, as well as the option to use your own custom mp3 file:

    MUSIC IN THE GARAGE
    New “endless” and non-recurring music will be played in the Premium Garage. In addition, it will naturally respond to some of the player’s actions.

    OPTIMISATION
    The Low Quality preset will be reworked: It will be available to all players and will sound better than before without impacting on performance. In particular, instead of switching Wwise to low quality mode (as it was before), only the number of simultaneously playing sounds will be reduced and the quietest of them will be carefully removed:

    MICRO-STUTTER WHILE PLAYING ON WINDOWS 10?

    During a recent update to Windows 10, Microsoft enabled by default, a feature called Game DVR. This is linked to the Xbox application that comes with Windows 10. This feature records gameplay and screenshots but can considerably effect performance on older machines, it could be worth disabling even if your system is newer as you could see a slight performance increase. There are several ways to disable this feature which we will describe for you below.

    OPTION ONE (EASY)
    Go into your Xbox app and disable it via the toggle switch. You may have to login to see these settings.

    OPTION TWO (MODERATE)
    You can also disable it via the registry in Windows 10. Navigate to these files in the registry and edit them as follows; do not do this if you are not familiar with editing registry files.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameDVR

    AppCaptureEnabled (DWORD)
    0 = Off
    1 = On

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\GameConfigStore

    GameDVR_Enabled (DWORD)
    0 = Off
    1 = On

    OPTION THREE (ADVANCED)
    You can remove the app entirely through Windows Powershell.

    1) Start an Administrative Powershell window
    2) Run the command *Get-AppxPackage | Select Name,PackageFullname* (This will list installed Metro apps)
    3) Locate the Xbox packaged "Microsoft.XboxApp"
    4) Type *Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.XboxApp | Remove-AppxPackage*
    5) If no errors, uninstallation was successful.
    5) Reboot and the Xbox integration will be gone from full screen games and the Start menu

    (Remove the * from the commands, otherwise you will return an error)

    LISTENING POST - WINDOWS ATE OUR HARD-DRIVES!

    We apologize for the lack of content, during an update to Windows 10, our hard-drives were rendered useless on both machines. We have one up and running currently, but recovery of our files, is top priority at this time. We will hopefully be back up and running by Monday.

    (UPDATE)
    Our replacement hard drives arrived today, 2 days later than expected. We are in the process of installing and recovering anything we can. We hope to be back up and running by tomorrow. Again sorry for this downtime but it was beyond our control.

    WARGAMING TERMINATES VEIDERS CONTRACT

    Today one of Wargaming's employees who goes by Veider, who is part of the balancing department has been terminated by his employers. He posted a message on the Russian forums criticizing Wargaming and the upcoming Swedish tanks.

    Update: Due to issues with translation, the following comment comes from a player called 'SP15' and not from Veider as earlier thought. He has been conducting research on the Swedish tree and has leaked some sensitive information in regards to it. It is not clear if Veider has been terminated by Wargaming, or been moved from the balancing team.
    If WG is just going to make stats up when they know the real ones since long ago there is nothing more i can do. Frankly I should have taken the whole Strv 103 thing as a sign of things to come because there is nothing good to come of the mess that is the Swedish tree in the future. WG is making crap up when it comes to the heavy tank armour and all the stats on the ivk 103 are completely made up garbage. And as a bonus and to make sure I really burn some bridges they are planning to introduce the LS-50 tank that I proposed as a premium tier 8 medium despite it being a outright fake and despite there being historical alternatives available. “It's officially over, I'm not doing this anymore. The Swedish tree was a waste of three years of my life and I want nothing more to do with it."
    Obviously we are not aware of the internal issues or practices of Wargaming, but this is a damming statement coming from one of the internal developers.

    SUPERTEST - PILSEN MAP CHANGES

    T40 WHIZBANG SEEN AT TOKYO GAMESHOW

    Over on the World of Tanks Reddit page, user Tsurupettan posted images from the Wargaming stage at the Tokyo Gameshow. What caught out eye was this image of the T40 Whizbang. At this stage not much information is know as to why this tank was shown, so we are not going to jump to conclusions at this stage.

    With Wargaming introducing several game events over the past 2 years, we are sure they are planning more for the future, food for thought.

    You can view the full album here.

    WORLD OF TANKS - CONVOY EVENT NOW AVAILABLE

    During todays update, convoy mode was added to World of Tanks. This mode involves escorting a Mark I tank across the map while the opposing enemy teams tries to destroy it. More information on this mode is available on the World of Tanks official website.

    WORLD OF TANKS - CONSOLE UPDATE 3.3 "TYPHOON"

    We will not be covering World of Tanks Console content often, but this is notable due to certain changes and we believe it to be worth posting, so enjoy.

    NEW BRITISH TIER 10
    First and foremost, WarGaming Chicago-Baltimore has announced the introduction of the Chieftain Mk.6 as a new British Tier X heavy. Surprisingly not replacing the old FV215b, so likely branching off from the Tier 9 Conqueror.

    In addition, the FV4202 will be replaced by the Centurion Action X.

    The following will transfer from FV4202 to Centurion Action X
    - Crew and Tank XP
    - Battle Stats and Marks of Excellence
    - Equipment and Inscriptions and Camo

    The FV4202 will now be a Tier 8 Premium tank. Anyone who owns the FV4202 at the time of the update will recieve the 4202 Premium for free as well as the Action X. Anyone who at one point owned the 4202 will recieve the premium, but must purchase the Action X with their own silver, though it will be researched already.

    ARMOUR AND COMPONENT VIEWER
    A welcome addition to the console version, opening the ‘Details’ tab in the garage will bring up new tank stat ratings, as well as an armor viewer and component/module viewer (seen here with the Action X)

    One caveat is that these will only be available for tanks already in your garage. A bit of a bummer for those who have few tanks and are looking to gather info on a particular opponent, but should help with those looking to know their own machines better.

    TWO NEW MAPS
    First up, Pacific Island- Typhoon. This will be an Extreme Weather Variant, so reduced visual spotting and radio range.

    The second map will be a Random Battle variant of the upcoming ‘Trench Warfare’ map for our WW1 themed game mode, introducing Thiepval Ridge…
