IMPROVED EQUIPMENT - NOT AS BAD AS IT LOOKS

With update 9.19 comes Ranked Mode, which allows you to earn Improved Equipment using the bonds you gain through participating in this mode. While it's not a perfect system, only rewarding those with current Tier 10s and the ability to dedicate time. There has been a lot of negativity surrounding this Improved Equipment and while I do not defend it, I do hope that you can come to see that it's not as awful as it sounds.

Lets look at a few examples using the Gun Rammer and Improved Gun Rammer. I have simplified the numbers to make the math easier to calculate and read;

GR = Credit bought Standard Gun rammer 10%
IGR = Bond bought Improved Gun rammer 12.5%

As you can see the Improved Gun Rammer only really starts to effect the tanks with long reloads, anything under 10 seconds is going to see very small improvements. While you can argue it is better than what a majority of player will be using, it's only really effective if your able to fire again the moment you have reloaded.

Now lets see how this translates to damage-per-minuet, again I will simplify the numbers;

GR = Credit bought Standard Gun rammer 10%
IGR = Bond bought Improved Gun rammer 12.5%

I think we can close with a conclusion now, while it sounds bad, in theory it's not awful. The numbers are small, if we look at the damager-per-minuet increase, it gives very little advantage. Improved equipment will sure be used in high level clan wars and tournaments no doubt, but if you don't have it or have the time and patience, your not really loosing to much.

WORLD OF TANKS - UPDATE 9.19 RELEASE DATE NEARS

During the 9.19 Common Test, quite a few tankers put some serious work into climbing the Ranked Battles ladder to fight increasingly challenging opponents. Before the battle gets too heated (and it sure will when the Ranked Battles Beta Season kicks off), let’s take a breather to highlight how you could use the Bonds you rack up in the mode.

You can spend Bonds on Directives and Improved Equipment. Available exclusively with this currency, these new items will come in handy in Random and Ranked Battles, Clan Wars, and tournaments alike, boosting vehicle and Crew efficiency. Let’s dig deeper into the details, shall we?

See more about update 9.19 at the official World of Tanks website here.

WARGAMING STATEMENT ON PAY-2-WIN COMING SOON

Little late to post this, I saw it a few days ago and had it sitting in draft and just forgot to publish it. Wargaming are apparently going to address the Pay-2-Win issue during the WGL Grand Finals. Why they would choose this platform is a mystery, as only a small percentage of players watch the competitive gaming scene. We will keep an eye out for this supposed Q&A and post any updates as they come.

Below is the statement from Kandly, a Wargaming community coordinator:

THE LISTENING POST - SMARTPHONE SITE ACCESS

We have begun improving the mobile web version of the site. You may notice some issues over the next week caused by this. Hopefully the changes will improve the load times and make reading more enjoyable on handheld devices.

Listening Post Team.

WORLD OF TANKS - OFFICIAL MODIFICATION PORTAL

Wargaming yesterday launched the official site for the distribution of modifications for World of Tanks. This is the second attempt to do something similar from the company.

At the moment the project is in the open Alpha testing stage and will be further developed and improved over time. The portal is guaranteed to have working and pre-approved versions of your favourite modifications.

The site is currently only available in Russian here: WGMODS.NET

BLITZ - PREMIUM SHELLS IN UPDATE 3.9

While we don't cover World of Tanks Blitz here fulltime on the Listening Post, I think this is more than worth of a post considering the importance of such changes.

In Update 3.9, Premium shells will become cheaper, but will cause less damage. As a result, this type of ammunition will be more affordable for all players, and the value of personal skill will increase. See all the details below!

You can read more about this on the official World of Tanks Blitz website here.

VALKYRIE CHRONICLES CREW PORTRAITS (ASIA)

Crew portraits for the upcoming Valkyrie Chronicles tanks have been revealed. Remember these are only available in the Asia region because of copyright and market conditions.

THE LISTENING POST - WELL THAT HAPPENED!

Update: Everything looks good now, packet loss is minimal, apart from the odd random disconnect.

So there was a vehicle collision near my home several days ago, pretty normal seeing some of the roads around here are misleading and common accident spots. Only this time the local exchange was taken out during the vehicle accident, that thing that controls the Internet to homes. British Telecomms has been working to get this issue fixed and it's mostly up and running now. There's still going to be service issues over the weekend, so not everything is back to normal quite yet.

As you can imagine this issue was out of my control, but hopefully now there is at least a connection we can get back to normal service. That said, looks like we missed some interesting news.

COMING SOON - AMERICAN CHRYSLER K (GF) HEAVY

The Chrysler K GF will be sold during the 2017 World of Tanks Grand Finals.

The Chrysler K also got the new name of Chrysler K GF (Chrysler GF). The Chrysler is a Tier VIII heavy tank, it comes with black camo and a Grand Finals logo on the front upper plate. Testing took place on the Super Test in October 2016. The price of the tank in gold will be 9200 (to be confirmed). According to Wargaming, the tank is being introduced to recoup the costs of the tournament.

Review of this tank will be here on the Listening Post when it is released. You can view the stats and armour layout here at tanks.gg - chrysler k.

THE CHEIFTAINS HATCH - SWEDISH STRV 103C PART 2

In the second part of the Inside the Chieftain's Hatch episode about the Strv 103 tank, Nicholas Moran will talk about the crew positions, height restrictions, the number of people required to control the S-tank, and show the unique position of the radio operator/driver who faces backwards. Enjoy!

WORLD OF TANKS - UPDATE 9.19 RELEASE DATE

All signs show an estimated release date of 29th-30th of May on the Russian servers. This will shortly be followed by the European and American servers. Currently the patch has been delayed slightly by the ongoing 2017 Grand Finals.

THE LISTENING POST - POSSIBLE POSTING ISSUES

Anyone have a spare usb 2.0 controller chip for a keyboard?

Unfortunately posting this weekend might be an issue, a new keyboard is currently waiting for dispatch but might not arrive until early next week. I'm working on getting a cheap one to cover this period. So just a heads up, as posting content is quite a challenge without one. Thankfully weekends are usually quiet in regards to news, but I just want to keep you all informed of the current situation.

MATCHMAKING EXPLOIT UPDATE - PATCH COMING SOON

A patch to correct the current matchmaking exploit is almost ready to go live. The Russian servers will receive it tomorrow, shortly followed by the rest of the international servers.

COMMENT ON THE CURRENT MATCHMAKING EXPLOIT BUG

I received an email about a current know exploit. I am aware of such an issue and would like to clarify my stance and that of the Listening Post. I will not be promoting such exploits on this site, as all it will do is cause more people to use said exploit. Promoting borderline cheating is counter productive to making the game better. Yes I agree the current matchmaking system still needs refinement, but exploiting it for gain is unfair to others who play fair.

THE CHEIFTAINS HATCH - SWEDISH STRV 103C PART 1

The new episode of Inside the Chieftain's Hatch is dedicated to the revolutionary Swedish Strv 103 tank. In the first part, Nicholas Moran will examine the tank's exterior and talk about the savvy Swedish engineers who mounted the gun onto the tank hull, removed the gunner's position, and used fuel tanks as additional armor. Enjoy!

WORLD OF TANKS - EXTRA 9.19 UPDATE DETAILS

Sound

We’ve heard many of you wanted a female voiceover, and 9.19 delivers on this request with an all-new “Commander” set of voice messages. This option replaces the “National” voiceover in the sound settings. Just flag “Commander” to enable voice messages that correspond with the vehicle’s nation and the gender of its commander.

The German VK 72.01 (K)

Back in 9.17.1, the German line welcomed the new Tier X heavy, Pz. Kpf VII. Unlike the Clan Wars VK 72.01 (K), the newcomer was equipped with the 12.8 cm Kw. K. 46 L/61. The two top-tier vehicles were extremely similar in appearance, which caused quite a backlash. In 9.19., the VK 72.01 (K) receives an additional loadout with spare chain tracks and an AA machine gun. This should stress the uniqueness of the reward tank that gets credited for stellar performance during Global Map events. The armour protection of the two vehicles remains unchanged.

Perks

Remember how you needed to recruit an all-female Crew to benefit from the Sisterhood of Steel perk? And how that is just the same with Brothers in Arms? Update 9.19 gets rid of this unfortunate complication by uniting these perks into one. Mixed Crews will receive a 5% boost to their effectiveness just as all-new and all-female squads do.

THE ARMOURED RUNDOWN - AMERICAN THUNDERBOLT VII

In this Armoured Rundown, we take a look at the Premium Tier VI American medium tank - M4A3E8 Thunderbolt VII. The goal is to give you an in-depth look at upcoming premiums, break down their strengths and weaknesses, then finally conclude if the tank is worth the value. I will objectively look at these tanks, and give my honest opinion while trying to remain as neutral as possible - but voice concerns should the need arise.

FIREPOWER

The firepower of the Thunderbolt VII is a mixed bag, while the overall soft gun stats are good, the low base penetration will give you trouble in Tier 8 games verses more heavily armoured tanks. Against German tanks like the VK 100.01 (P) the Thunderbolt will really struggle to penetrate, even if it has the side of the tank while firing APCR. The gun depression allows the Thunderbolt to use ridges effectively and go hull down, though don't rely on this too much or you will be punished.

The Thunderbolt also has low damage per shot, coming in at 115, although this is compensated somewhat by good damage per minute (DPM). The mediocre penetration makes this more of a theoretical number, however. The lack of penetration is something it has in common with the other American (T6) mediums. You will likely have to rely on firing APCR to make the most of the tank in many situations.

Pros.
+ Good damage per minuet (DPM)
   + Good dispersion stats
   + Good gun depression
Cons.
   - Low penetration
   - Low damage per shot
   - Low shell velocity with AP

ARMOUR

This is where the tank shows it's biggest improvements over the M4A3E8, the front plate is of considerable thickness. This allows the tank to take multiple hits from the same tiers without fear of penetration. The turret is also improved, with spaced armour covering the front and most the side with a strong gun mantlet. It will not make you immune to all incoming fire, but offers viable protection - especially against high explosive anti-tank (HEAT).

The tank also features some added spaced armour on the relatively weak Sherman side armour, and allows sharper angling to maximise the protection the frontal armour provides. The armour overall is quite effective against same-tier tanks. High explosive anti-tank (HEAT) ammunition will struggle more to penetrate the spaced Armour. The rest of the tank is typical M4 Sherman, weak rear armour and upper engine deck allow high explosive to do large amounts of damage.

Pros.
   + Good frontal hull armour
   + Decent turret armour
Cons.
   - Low side armour
   - Frontal weak spots
   - Weak rear and engine deck

MOBILITY

With that extra armour comes the drawbacks, the power to weight of the Thunderbolt takes a large hit. This slows down the acceleration and traverse of the tank, as well as its top speed. While you could still consider it somewhat mobile, you will feel it struggle on slopes and hard terrain. The engine also drops by 20hp/t adding to the sluggishness.

The Thunderbolts mobility is not awful, but you will feel it, if you have experience with the British Firefly then I would compare the two, both being around the same general level of mobility, although the Thunderbolt does have the higher top speed.

Pros.
   + Average mobility
   + Average traverse
Cons.
   - Low power to weight
   - Low(ish) top speed

CONCLUSION

This is a difficult conclusion to make, the tank is fun to play, but let down by low penetration and damage per shot, but that is the problem, it's only fun to play. There is not a lot new here, the Thunderbolt is a medium tank pretending to be a heavy and beyond that, it's a normal M4 Sherman. You will struggle in Tier 8 MM like most Tiers 6 tanks do, but pressing the 2 key will alleviate some of those issues, but eat into your potential credit earnings.

If you like playing the normal American M4s without having the ability to mount the 105mm howitzer, then get it, the crew it comes with is worth some gold in itself. The zero skill Brothers-In-Arms crew basically comes with a free skill. Don't expect anything new or thrilling. I will say this, the Thunderbolt looks amazing, the model is a pleasure to look at and I would seriously consider buying it just for that.

The basic package will set you back £12.29 or $17.99 in your local currency.

PREMIUM - THUNDERBOLT VII AND BERLIN QUARTET [EU]

May is a packed month for World of Tanks players. For starters, there’s the exciting introduction of the M4A3E8 Thunderbolt, and the Berlin Quartet is back for a limited time!

The Thunderbolt packs a 76mm cannon and more Armour than the M4A3E8 Sherman sister model, and historically, it was under the command of Lieutenant Creighton Abrams in World War II. The Berlin Quartet is a collection of four tanks, three of which played a key role in the waning days of hostilities in Europe during World War II. If you’re new to this foursome, here's the details:

The British Cromwell B was involved in several key battles in the West, while in the East, the IS-2’s smashed German defences in the relentless drive toward Berlin. The ISU-122S, a variation of the IS-2, equipped with a 122mm heavy assault gun, was a fearsome tank destroyer.

The T-34-85 was also involved in the final push into the German capitol, and was the basis for the T-34-85 “Rudy,” a fictional tank that found fame thanks to a popular Polish TV series, “Four Tank-Men and a Dog.” This tier IV medium tank even includes a canine Crewmember!

WORLD OF TANKS - FOURTH BANWAVE TAKES EFFECT

Today the 4th ban wave has taken effect, people caught using forbidden modifications that would give them an unfair advantage have been suspended. There have been complaints that people have being wrongly banned, but that will be for Wargaming to clear up should that prove the case.

We continue to impose penalties on players caught on forbidden modifications that give them an edge in the game. We recently penalised 2891 accounts for the first time, and 898 people once caught cheating were completely excluded from the game. In the future we will continue to monitor battle statistics to reduce cheating and build a healthy gaming environment.

BIRTHDAY CAKE - THE LISTENING POST IS 1 YEAR OLD

Huge thanks to everyone who has visited and supported us, we have had a few issues along the way which were unfortunate, but beyond our control for the most part. We have plenty planned for this year, and hope to grow the Listening Post into a reliable and resourceful site.

Technically, we are a little older than a year, the theme took several week to complete, many hours of looking at numbers and letters I did not understand. After initial release we realised it was lacking, scrapping most of it and starting again with a full rewrite.

Here's to another 365 days, should nothing happen - fingers crossed!

WARGAMING EXPERIENCING SERVER ISSUES EU/NA

WARGAMING LEAGUE FINALS - THE LOBSTER OF TRUTH

Wargaming Grand Finals 2017.

Meet Tomato, the lobster predicting the future. After months of contemplation, the Wargaming.net League has sought help from under the sea, recruiting Tomato the lobster. The crustacean will be predicting the winning teams in The Grand Finals 2017 by choosing between two teams every match.

Tomato the lobster started his career after his previous owner discovered he was able to correctly predict the outcomes of horse races, which saved him from the pot. Over the years, his reputation has reached boiling point, and Wargaming decided to reach out to draw on his talents for The Grand Finals 2017.

Tomato will be placed in a tank, with the two possible outcomes to the left and right of him. Using his innate abilities, the lobster will choose who he believes will win a particular matchup. The Wargaming.net League hosts will be deferring to Tomato each time a battle is in sight, to see who the red guy chooses.

You can follow the clairvoyant crustacean as he makes his choices during the livestream. Follow the links to see what Tomato makes of it all: Watch The Grand Finals Live
